  Join the Religious Education committee of Bethesda Friends Meeting and Young Friends group of the Sandy Spring Monthly Meeting for an intergenerational service project hosted by the Ward 8 Woods Conservancy on Saturday, May 4, 2:00-4:00 p.m. We will meet at 3847 8th St SE, Washington, DC, the site of a long-demolished public house complex, to heal the land and interrupt the cycle of public disinvestment and neglect.

   The work includes cutting back invasive weeds and collecting trash, so dress for the occasion with closed-toed shoes with good traction (hiking or work boots are ideal, sneakers are ok); full-length pants (no shorts) to protect against thorns, ticks, and poison ivy; wear clothes you won't mind getting dirty; bring your own water bottles.

   Our host for this private event is Nathan Harrington of SSMM, who is the Executive Director of the Ward 8 Woods Conservancy. Nathan will provide gloves, trash bags, tools, and a cooler of ice water.

              There is ample street parking at the site and carpooling is encouraged. Congress Heights Metro Station on the green line is the closest metro, about 1 mile away.

  Youth care is available on non-holiday weekends for children over 5 years of age on non-First Day School Sundays (i.e., the 2nd, 4th and 5th Sundays of a month) during Meeting for Worship. Youth care volunteers are needed for November 12. We seek a core group who could volunteer three or four times per year. There will be a sign-up sheet at Meeting asking for two volunteers each non-First Day School Sunday. One volunteer will pair with a paid childcare provider to supervise play for the children under 5 years old. The second volunteer will pair with a paid childcare provider to supervise activities for children 5 years and older. This is an opportunity to get to know our wonderful group of children. It is also an opportunity to support parents of younger children who wish to attend Meeting for Worship. Crafts and game activities are provided. You may also sign up via a signup genius link:

  How do we quiet our brains enough to hear the still, small voice within us? How might we deepen our experience of meeting for worship? Experiment with Light is a meditative and centering practice based upon Rex Ambler’s book Light to Live By, which describes early Quaker meditative habits and translates them into a highly accessible process of clearness and understanding. All are welcome to attend. First-time participants find the process quite easy to follow and often richly rewarding.

  This is an invitation to two such sessions on Sunday evenings, January 14 and 28, from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. People will listen to the prompts on their own at their own homes. The following link should work to hear the words in audio format:

  The RE Committee invites families with children to a BFM Springtime Family Gathering at Lee and Greg Ingram's Farm in Frederick, Maryland on Sunday, May 19th!   We will gather around 2:00 for all sorts of fun in the afternoon and then have an early outdoor potluck barbecue dinner at about 5:00 p.m. 

  There are many things for children and families to do at the farm:  a stream to play in, woods to walk in, badminton, corn hole, croquet, swings, and a zip line, and a lawn big enough for soccer, frisbee, or other games.  Lee recommends bringing an extra pair of shoes or boots if you plan to explore the woods or stream. The 18th century stone farmhouse will be available for tours, and basic use of the kitchen and bathrooms. 

  Please RSVP to Lee and Laura Lee Fischer to let them know if you can attend and what dish you can bring.  Directions and more information will be forwarded to those who RSVP that they’ll be present.

FCRP is dedicated to individual spiritual exploration with a focus on in-depth psychology, specifically Jungian psychology. The conference is open to all; you need not be a Quaker, a Jungian, or a psychologist. The theme this year is Internal Family Systems: Integrating spirituality into action that heals a wounded world. We will be looking at how Internal Family Systems can equip us with the tools for self-awareness, empathy, and authentic expressions of caring so that we can be effective advocates for peace and justice.   Youth care is available on non-holiday weekends for children over 5 years of age on non-First Day School Sundays (i.e., the 2nd, 4th and 5th Sundays of a month) during Meeting for Worship. We seek a core group who could volunteer three or four times per year. There will be a sign-up sheet at Meeting asking for two volunteers each non-First Day School Sunday. One volunteer will pair with a paid childcare provider to supervise play for the children under 5 years old. The second volunteer will pair with a paid childcare provider to supervise activities for children 5 years and older. This is an opportunity to get to know our wonderful group of children. It is also an opportunity to support parents of younger children who wish to attend Meeting for Worship. Crafts and game activities are provided. You may also sign up via a signup genius link:

  Childcare is available on non-holiday weekends from 10:45 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. for children under 5 years of age. Paid caregivers will provide this service.

For new and visiting families, parents will be asked to fill out a very short registration form. The BFM Youth Safety Policy requires that all young people (infant to 18 years old) must be supervised by a parent, teachers, or child care staff at all times.
